WHAT IS MOKUME GANE?
Mokume Gane, literally translated from Japanese, means
"wood-grain metal". It is a technique by which non-ferrous metals
(gold, silver, copper, bronze) are fused in thick stacks of alternating
layers. Done correctly, there is only one molecule of alloy between
layers. This stack is then rolled down to a thin sheet (usually 1 - 2
mm), bumped and hammered to create high and low points, then filed and
polished smooth to reveal a pattern that may be random or controled.
